What Professional Indemnity Insurance Covers

Professional indemnity insurance protects you against a claim for alleged negligent act error or omission resulting in financial loss to someone else (usually your customer)

The policy will pay for damages awarded against you and for legal defence costs. In practice your insurer will negotiate a settlement with the other side before allowing the case to go to court.

I addition we can usually negotiate to include the following:

• Breach of Copyright - covers claims made against you for infringement of copyright/patent
• Libel & slander - covers claims made against you for unintentional libel or slander
• Retroactive cover. Professional indemnity policies cover claims made against you while the policy is in force. However when you take a policy out for the first time the Insurer will usually exclude claims arising out of work done before the policy is taken out. We can negotiate to re-include this past cover
